Today was a good day! For the most part everyone was on task and enjoying it! I secretly believe kids love routine as much as adults! Last week we worked really hard on getting into routine, and it helped out tremendously today! Things to keep in mind this week:
1.) We started the reading series this week. We are specifically studying the short a sound. The story for the week is on the back of the newsletter. If your child struggles, or tires out, while reading the story, read the story with them! Ask simple questions after reading the story - Who was the main character? What happened at the beginning, middle, end of the story? How did the character(s) feel? We will start taking reading tests this week. The more you prepare your child now, the easier the tests will be - especially when they are required to read the test independently.
2.) We will also begin taking spelling tests this week. Look for tips on studying spelling words to come home in your child's Tuesday Folder. While spelling tests are not an "actual" grade this nine weeks, it is best to prepare your child as if they are a grade!
3.) We began having homework this week. Remember to check your child's folder in the homework section for homework assignments. Also, initial the homework for the day so that I know you have seen your child's work. I have tried to not give an incredible amount of homework, because I value family time as much as the next person. Hopefully this system will work well.
4.) I have started a behavior chart in your child's homework folder. This chart is based on where your child's clip was placed at the end of the day. The number correlates with the chart on the side of the behavior chart. Please initial this daily so that I know you are aware of your child's behavior for the day.
I am very proud of all the kids! They've jumped right in and seem eager to learn! I know things have been pretty hectic with "send this, sign that" - but I promise that things will settle down soon and you will be able to just enjoy seeing your child learn, and believe me - they will! As always, if you have any questions/comments/concerns - please feel free to contact me!
